In The Pharmacy #64 – Mid-September 2014

The 19 best songs from the last two weeks. New music from the US, UK, Canada, and Sweden. Stars ‘Turn It Up’
The first of two tracks from Stars forthcoming  No One Is Lost album (due out October 14). This quasi-title track finds Amy Millan on lead vocals and features the kind of life affirming nostalgia that many of the best Stars songs tap into. Specifically, ‘Turn It Up’ recalls images of the first day back at school as summer recedes into memory; lying on the floor, listening to music with your headphones on; seeing someone’s face for the first time. The chorus is particularly beautiful.
[Stars]

King Tuff ‘Headbanger’
Awesome power pop about falling in love over a shared taste for heavy metal. “Me and you we got a true connection / I knew it when I saw your record collection / You had Sabbath and ‘Priest and Number of The Beast it was Saturday night of perfection”.

Blonde Redhead ‘Dripping’

The New York trio have evolved over their 21 year existence from their noiserock origins on those Touch & Go albums via the dreampop and shoegaze influenced recent releases on 4AD. Now they return, four years after Penny Sparkle with a new label (Kobalt) for ninth album Barragán and what seems like it may be something different again. The haunting instrumental No More Honey had an almost Rick Wright feel to it, while this slow but danceable number feels like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Caribou album.
[Blonde Redhead]

Burnt Palms ‘Don’t Go’
Fuzz pop from the Seaside, CA all female trio.
[Burnt Palms]

Peter Matthew Bauer ‘You Are The Chapel’

PMB’s Liberation! is the third album released by a former member of The Walkmen so far this year, following on from Hamilton Leithauser’s indie-lounge croon Black Hours and Walter Martin’s guest-star-heavy family album We’re All Young Together. Just as good and idiosyncratic as those other two releases, it’s an album informed by Eastern religion, intellectual agnosticism and Jungian psychology and has a hyper, ramshackle charm. The only good thing about the Walkmen splitting up is that we now get (so far) three great new albums instead of just the one.
[Peter Matthew Bauer]

Bat For Lashes ‘Skin Song’

Slow, glitchy number from Natasha Khan taken from Body Of Songs, a project which pairs artists with scientists to create music about a bodily organ
.
[Bat For Lashes]

ITP 2014: Now on Spotify

As we hit the halfway point of 2014 we’ve hit a dry patch in what has so far been a great year for new music. Time to take a short breather from the cloudcasts (regular service will resume later in July). For now here’s a new In The Pharmacy Spotify Playlist featuring all the available tracks from the first six months of the year, which means all the ITP goodness will sound great on your mobile devices too.

I’ll continue to add new tracks as and when they become available, so don’t forget to subscribe using the ‘Follow’ button in Spotify. If you want to get everything first and in regular, fortnightly bite-size chunks, you should stick with Mixcloud as well.

One of the reasons for choosing Mixcloud over Spotify is that I can use advance tracks before they are added to Spotify and some (like the excellent Tacocat tracks from their debut album) are not on Spotify at all. Still, of the 210 tracks featured so far this year, Spotify does have a respectable 176 available.
NB: I use the UK version of Spotify so you may end up seeing fewer, depending on the rights in your country.

Quasi-title track of the superb new album Brightly Painted One from the Kiwi trio fronted by Hollie Fullbrook.
[Tiny Ruins]

Craft Spells ‘Twirl’
After the excellent ‘Breaking the Angle Against the Tide’ (ITP #55) here’s another track from the San Franciso / Seattle band’s Nausea album (Captured Tracks), it’s breezy indie with hints of dreampop, and a tasteful guitar solo.
[Craft Spells]

Haunted Hearts ‘Love Incognito’
Dee Dee Penny (Dum Dum Girs) and Brandon Welchez (Crocodiles) have created an album of psych pop that betters either of the recent releases by their respective main projects.
[Haunted Hearts]

The Donkeys ‘Nothing’
The San Diego band’s fourth album of breezy Cali-pop Ride The Black Wave is something special indeed. This is one of many highlights and reminds me of Local Natives at their best.
[The Donkeys]

Tennis ‘Never Work For Free’
First taste of the husband and wife duo’s forthcoming third album Ritual in Repeat. Sounds like it will be a more polished and 80s sounding affair than their brilliant 2012 album Young & Old. Catchy stuff, mining a similar vein to The Preatures and Haim.
[Tennis]

First Aid Kit ‘Waitress Song’
The Swedish folk duo seem to have tapped into a similar vein of alt country as Neko Case on this track from their forthcoming third album Stay Gold, produced once again by Mike Moggis .
[First Aid Kit]

Hundred Waters ‘Down From The Rafters’
Alt-folky meets dreampop on the track from the Gainesville band’s second album, The Moon Rang Like A Bell.

[King Dude]

Nun ‘Evoke The Sleep’
Melbourne dark electronic pop band with an early-Mute Records / early Cabaret Voltaire aesthetic. You can hear Sue Tompkins (Life Without Buildings) and Lesley Woods (The Au Pairs) in Jenny Branagan’s vocals. This single came out a couple of months back but worth flagging up noiw as their debut album has just been released on Aarght and Avant.
[Nun]

Emma Ruth Rundle ‘Shadows of My Name’
For someone know for playing instrumental post-rock in Red Sparrowes, Los Angelino Emma Ruth Rundle is in possession of a remarkable voice from the Liz Fraser school of warble-belters. More straightforwardly indie folk than the shoegaze influenced stuff she does with Marriages, this is taken from her beautfiul debut solo album Some Heavy Ocean.
[Emma Ruth Rundle]

Phonograph ‘Fading Into You’
Not to be confused with the similarly named Brooklyn band, this is from the London band’s powerpop album Volume 1, which takes The Beatles as a starting point in much the same way Crowded House did. This was recorded back in 2001, but has only just seen the light of day via bandcamp.
[Phonograph]
